Braemar village lies at the foothills of the Cairngorm mountains. Its location at the confluence of the Glens has assured its place in history, it was in Braemar that the standard was raised during the Jacobite rebellion of 1715. Braemar has its own castle, and ruins of an even older one (Kindrochit)! Braemar castle is open to visitors in the summer months and Balmoral castle, the highland retreat of the Royal Family, is only 9 miles away. The Royal Lochnagar Distillery, one of the smallest working distilleries in Scotland, is just a short drive away and makes a fine destination for that rainy day. Braemar is also the home of the most famous of all highland games. With the Queen and Royal family in attendance it is a treat not to be missed. The games are annual, on the first Saturday in September. Braemar also boasts its own golf course, the highest in the UK. Fishing, Cycling, Walking and Skiing are some of the many activities you can enjoy when you come and stay at Craiglea. |
